Welcome to Weekly Round-Up No. 14! This week we review four soulful debut releases: MIKAH, Lewis Capaldi, Francis Novotny and FARR. And we feature the new single by San Jua. Enjoy the music!
MIKAH – Iron
MIKAH is the solo project of Mika Moupondo, singer of soul/pop band Otherside (hit: “Blowback“). His debut “Iron” is a modern electronic-based R&B song about an unwanted but now accepted end of a relationship. Mikah sounds sincere; sad at the beginning, but he brightens every time he sings the refrain. Just like the lyrics: relieved and accepting.
Lewis Capaldi – Bruises
What an amazing deep and powerful soulful voice! It makes Lewis Capaldi stand out from the rest of singer-songwriters. He excels on his debut song “Bruises”. Despite his powerful voice (and piano only), he knows how to create an intimate and vulnerable atmosphere. It will hit your soul immediately.
Francis Novotny – Between The Lines
Singer-songwriter and producer Francis Novotny released his third song and official debut single last week: “Between The Lines”. It’s another surprisingly diverse R&B song. With a firm hip hop beat, harsh experimental electronic sounds he creates a backbone for his falsetto vocals, making this is another intriguing and emotional gem.
FARR – Down
Even more soul this week! FARR are London producer Linden Jay and vocalist Romeo. Together they create the smooth and sensual R&B song “Down”. Add some touches of funk and gospel and you have an impressive killer of a tune!
San Jua – Break Your Fall
After their extraordinary dreamy debut “Laid To Waste” only a few weeks ago, San Jua return with another beautiful dreampop song called “Break Your Fall”. Starting out tender and fragile, the song builds into an amazing orchestral finale. Although there is a little sadness in the vocals, there is hope in the music. Brilliant.
